About the Speaker
Samina Mishra is a documentary filmmaker, writer, and teacher based in New Delhi. Her work uses the lens of childhood, identity and education to reflect the experiences of growing up in India. Her recent work includes the books Roop and the River Crossing and Where Does It Hurt, The Hum Hindustani Poetry Podcast on children and citizenship, and The Incredible Child, an arts-based programme for Afghan refugee children at the Simurgh Centre, Delhi. Samina founded The Magic Key Centre for the Arts and Childhood that works on intersections between childhood, the arts and education. Samina hopes that her work makes children think about the world they want to live in, and encourages adults to support children in realising that world.
Talk Abstract
This talk centres around her book, Roop and the River Crossing, as well as the multimedia project Hum Hindustani, on children and citizenship. Through them, she explores the legacy of Partition, and how childhood and nation-building intersect. The talk examines what becomes part of the collective memory of big events like Partition and how we can look at that afresh by including children’s voices and lived experiences to build a more nuanced understanding of both our history and our present.
